The "Superstition" Litter
Born Friday, January 13, 2012

The first breeding between Emma and Brew was on 11/11/11. When we figured the litter's due date we were surprised to discover that they would be due on Friday the 13th! We expected Emma to deliver the puppies a day or two early when we found out there were 11 puppies waiting to come out. But Emma held off until around noon on Friday, January 13th. She delivered 6 girls and 4 boys, all black. Unfortunately we did lose one little boy.

Tug of war!!
Picture
At 5 weeks we introduced a pheasant wing into the whelping box for short periods of time. We also make sure each pup spends some time alone with a wing.
Picture
The weather was so nice for March we were able to get the puppies outside for some playtime & exposure to a different surface.
Picture
But then they also got to play in the snow!

Jasmine came to see the puppies one last time before they left for their new homes.

Shadow in his new home. In September, 2012 he earned his AKC STAR Puppy certificate.
Picture
January 2016: We received bad news last August - AJ had passed away from cancer. His widow, Candice, tells is that Shadow is finally growing into a terrific, young dog; all personality and fun loving. Simply wonderful!
Picture
July 2016: Shadow & Candice are getting ready to move to NC. She says "he is the best dog" and "AJ would be so proud of him."
Picture
January 2019: Shadow continues to enjoy the Southern life. He likes to snooze with Greenie, his favorite squeaky toy.
Picture
January 2021: Shadow is doing well despite some arthritis. He did give Candice a bit of a scare last fall when he developed a mass on his left hind leg. Luckily it was a histiocytoma, not cancer, and has slowly gotten smaller and he is now back to normal and can move without pain and run around with his new little sister Emma.
Picture
Pink Girl - Day 1
Picture
January 2018: Shadow and Candice are now enjoying the weather in NC. He is a faithful companion.
Picture
January 2020: Shadow takes after his mother, Emma. He often lays with his front paws crossed. He is still enjoying his life of leisure. If all goes well he will have a little brother or sister this spring - it all depends on Mocha.
Picture
Shadow welcomed his new little sister Emma in May 2020. She is one of Mocha's daughters from our Spring Litter. Shadow wasn't too sure about her in the beginning but they are getting along very well. She is keeping Shadow young and is helping him lose weight he gained when his leg was limiting his activity. She is a great exercise buddy! August 17, 2021: Shadow crossed the Rainbow Bridge today. He had been declining for the week earlier and had been to the vet who was looking into the possibility of gastric/intestinal cancer but Shadow became worse the last two days. Ironically he passed away almost seven years to the day that his dad AJ passed, also from cancer. Candice and Emma miss him so much but are comforted to know that he is at peace and with AJ again. We are so glad that we were able to see Shadow last year when he and Candice drove up from NC to pick up Emma.

Ziva in January, 2013. Wendy writes that she loves to retrieve anything you throw & just like Emma she always wants someone to play with her. Ziva is also very good at playing "Search". Someone hides one of her toys in the back yard & she will find it in 2 or 3 minutes.
Picture
When Ziva went home with the Bowery's we told them Flat-Coats are like potato chips - you can't have just one. In March, 2013 they came back to NY to pick up Ziva's new little sister, LadyBug, from Emma's Cosmic litter.

January 2020: Ziva is doing well despite the loss of one eye. In November, 2018 she was diagnosed with glaucoma and lost the eye in January, 2019. She has adjusted well and continues to enjoy her Flat-Coat siblings.
Picture
January 2021: Ziva is doing very well. She is slowing down a bit - doesn't jump on the bed but will hop down and can still get on & off the couch without a problem. She has become very talkative and will demand a treat from the cookie barrel if anyone gets near it!
Picture
January 2022: Ziva is doing great along with LadyBug & Jersey. She is as spry as ever which is pretty good for a 10 year old! March 22, 2022: Wendy & Mark said good bye to Ziva this morning. Ten days ago she lost control of her back legs. She was already on meds for arthritis and after an adjustment of her meds & 2 days at the vet she came home doing better. Sadly, the next weekend she could not control her back end. Their vet speculated she might have a ruptured disc or a tumor on her spine. With her quality of life slipping away they decided to let her go.
